What happens in the PC counter when an instruction execution is not successful ?

I know that PC (program counter) within CPU keeps track of what instruction is to be executed next. but what does PC do if the instruction being executed fails for some reason ? does the PC points to the same instruction that hasn't been executed successfully yet ? and what are some of the reasons that might lead to instruction execution faliure (other than syntax errors in the program being executed ) ?
